Looking back on Jackson's bar scene in 2008, our memories are foggy and best and completely blacked out at worst, so it must have been a good year for local nightlife.

While local standbys like Hal & Mal's, Martin's, Freelon's, Fenian's and more keep going strong, a number of upstart destinations joined the nightlife party in '08, giving Jackson fun-seekers even more choices for going out.

So here's a list of Jackson's newest hangouts, check it out and while your at it hit 'em up, we might just see you there.

Flood's Bar and Grill

Flood's, located right across from the Jackson Medical Mall on Bailey Avenue, is an exciting addition to Jackson's urban nightlife scene. Since opening in late 2008 the club has already played host to a number of events like parties surrounding the Capital City Classic, hip hop performances and more.

The Mansion

The Mansion is one of Jackson's newest upscale nightclubs. Located in the beautiful building that formerly housed Dennery's Restaurant, the club is convenient to the fairgrounds and downtown's lodging. The Mansion caters to the urban nightlife scene and the Jackson State University crowd, often featuring DJs and hosting theme parties.

You just can't keep a good bar downGeorge Street Grocery, the historic Jackson watering hole that was first actually a grocery after opening in 1911 and then became a live music destination in the '70s and '80s,finally reopened in December 2008 after shutting its doors in 2007. Well sort, of. The historic hangout has been revamped and reborn as Ole Tavern on George Street. The name's not all that's new, as the place now has a younger vibe and a more rock 'n' roll attitude, as evidenced by the inaugural concert featuring local rock bands Goodman County, Deltagun and Redneck Trucker on New Year's Eve '08. With bars both downstairs and upstairs (where the bands also play), and much of the buidling's original fixtures intact, it's the bar longtime Jacksonians know and love too though. The kitchen serves daily plate lunches like meatloaf, fried catfish and red beans and rice for $7.99 and also has a full menu of appetizers, salads and sandwiches, with unique offerings like Southern Pecan beer-battered onion rings, pimiento cheese fritters, the ole Tavern burger and more.

Pelican Cove Grill is located at the new Harbor Walk at the reservoir. Plenty of outdoor seating and boat docking available. This new casual restaurant is a family friendly destination for the water lover.

Tye's Restaurant & Bar

One of the only restaurants downtown that remains open at night. It is Jackson's newest downtown addition and sits in the plaza building catering to an art deco/mod style. Menu items range from steak, pasta and seafood entrees like the Blackened Redfish specialty. Appetizers extend from the lunch menu to the dinner fare and can accompany a few drinks during the happy hour from 4-6 everyday. Lunch features blue plate specials, salads, pastas and sandwiches. The full bar makes it a unique downtown spot that gives an umph to the urban element in the area.

Club Rain

Club Rain is a new nightclub that opened in November 2008 on Medgar Evers Boulevard near downtown Jackson that caters to the urban and Jackson State University crowds with DJs and theme parties. The building that houses the club is no stranger to the nightlife sceneit previously was home to Mr. B's, a popular nightclub that hosted many parties and hip hop performances.

Touch Nightclub and Taste Lounge

114 N. Farish St. - Jackson

Located on the corner of Farish and Capitol Street in downtown Jackson, Touch is a two-story, full-service nightclub, live music venue and restaurant/lounge with private party space available for rent seven days a week. They can accomodate up to 200 people in their super-plush VIP lounge or up to1,000 people in the upstairs nightclub/live music venue. Opening mid-January 2009, Touch and Taste are sure to become an immediate Jackson tradition.

pick VB's Premier Sports Bar

VB's is the metro area's newest sports bar, offering all that one would expect from a sports bar including two full bars, plenty of TVs and a hearty menu featuring po-boys and other menu items to go with your beer. It is located in the Centre Park shopping complex off County Line Road in Ridgeland.
