When you hear that Big Boi has signed on to produce the new Modest Mouse record, you generally think one of two things: a.) "What an unusual and forward-thinking melding of deeply talented people; I cannot wait to see how they draw out the strengths in each other," or b.) "Wha?!?" But ease back, people: At one time, the idea of Rick Rubin producing Johnny Cash was equally ridiculous. And besides, Big Boi is hardly the only noteworthy producer to assume the reins of an unusual project. Sometimes the results are sparkling, even revelatory. Sometimes you get Timbaland.
