Here’s the latest effort from the gang who brought you Bravo! and Broad Street Bakery, and this one’s even more fun.
Sal and Mookie’s brings you what they bill as a genuine New York pizza and ice cream joint. The ovens are actually from a family-run oven manufacturing facility in New Jersey (close enough), and the pizza does evoke the tradition of a pizzeria on Broadway – although this transported authenticity comes with higher-than-NYC prices.
The menu includes a wide range of very tasty specialty pizzas, with NYC-ish names like the “Hell’s Kitchen” (sliced tomatoes, fior de latte mozzarella, anchovies, capers, Kalamata olives, and chili flakes) or the “Meat Packing District” (cooked like it sounds). You also have the option of “building your own pizza”; the subs, pasta dishes and burgers are all also worth checking out.
The kids will enjoy watching the chefs make the pies from scratch through the kitchen’s big glass windows, while chomping on an ice cream cone. There’s even a new lounge in the room where they used to serve ice cream.
Combine all these elements and add a great location in the heart of Fondren, and you’ve got a winner… start spreading the news.
