Bon Ami, uniquely situated in the Maywood Mart Shopping Center off Northside Drive and I-55, is a locally owned restaurant worth a definite visit. A mastery of French cuisine with plenty of southern flair thrown in is what you’ll find in their beautifully decorated establishment.

They serve up breakfast, lunch and dinner with a wide variety of menu items. They also have take out and catering to fit just about any function as well as onsite options for parties.

The food: Ready for a great alternative to the same-old same-old to get you started in the morning? Check out their breakfast with eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits, with some mighty fine grits and hash browns.

They’ve also got omelets, croissant sandwiches, granola parfaits, or a “wrap it up” tortilla—all homemade and reasonably priced. Fresh fruit and plenty of coffee, milk and juice to finish your morning off is also available, or some of their awesome raspberry tea will get you going for sure. On weekends, a fine brunch is served and is sure to delight your taste buds with exceptional offerings.

At lunch, Bon Ami tends to turn into a great tea room-style dining experience. A nice array of salads, sandwiches, and entrées are all worthy, especially with their delicious homemade dressings.

You will find chicken salad, salmon, grilled chicken, crab cakes, shrimp, and tuna salads heaped up with plenty of salad greens, nuts, cheeses, and fruit.

The grilled homemade pimento and cheese served on wheat berry bread is some of the best I have tried. Just the right kick to it served with a wonderful side salad will have you coming back for more.

The lunch entrees of chicken ravioli, lasagna, tilapia, tuna or salmon are a must try as well as the crawfish penne that we tried cooked to perfection with sautéed crawfish in a basil cream sauce. They have a daily lunch special board so be sure to check it out before ordering or ask one of their skilled wait staff for details ($9.95-$14.95).

In the evenings a nice selection of appetizers, salads, and sandwiches gets you started and the entrée menu expands, featuring crawfish penne, seafood pasta, lasagna, tilapia, salmon, tuna, fresh fish of the day, shrimp, veal, duck breast and a divine beef filet. The filet is melt in your mouth good and most entrees are served with two sides ($15 - $27).

To end your dining experience, check out their homemade dessert offerings as you finish off your casual dining outing with a nice cup of coffee.

The drink: Bon Ami does not sell adult beverages however you are welcome to “brown bag” your favorite wine and they will serve it up properly for just a small corking fee. A nice wine and liquor store is a couple of doors down in case you don’t bring your favorite from home.

Otherwise, they have some of the best berry flavored iced tea in town, as well as plenty of soft drinks, coffee and juices to compliment your meal.

The scene: Upon entering the doors you will find the front of the restaurant with a takeout counter and plenty of dessert and casseroles to take with you. The staff, from the front of house to the wait staff, is extremely friendly and aiming to please.

You will be seated in a beautifully decorated dining area with great high back booths along the wall, plenty of tables, whether it’s just for two or a large group. Every table is adorned with a small bouquet of fresh flowers and the pictures on the walls are bright and cheery with just the perfect ambience to compliment your dining experience. There are also small tables outside for the people watching meal and enjoyable weather with beautiful fresh flower planters to enhance your dining experience.

The bottom line: Bon Ami is a must visit establishment, whether you are brunching, meeting a group for lunch, or seeking an intimate dinner for two. It does tend to be a little chatty at lunch, but most people are looking for a comfortable place to have a working lunch, a birthday club meeting place, or a quick, yet delicious meal. At night you will find it somewhat quieter yet with the same fine service and delectable food making it an excellent night spot for any size group.
