Where else can you choose from eight different types of pizza crusts other than the recently opened Hungry Howie’s Pizza on Old Canton Road right off the busy Reservoir area streets? I was first introduced to this pizzeria in Georgia and was extremely thrilled to find that it had made its way to the metro Jackson area. The restaurant prides itself on special pizza crusts, in house baking and special seasonings and are definitely a sure bet for the hungry pizza lover.

The Food
Pizza is definitely the name of the game here. Yet don’t let that stop you from trying one of their great calzones or subs. The pizza crusts are hand rolled, and come in eight different flavors. They rub the dough with special seasonings such as sesame, butter cheese, butter, ranch, Cajun, garlic herb, onion or their original crust style. You can mix and match your selection with twelve toppings to choose from. The pizzas come in six sizes, a 10 inch small, 12 inch medium, 14 inch large, junior, 16 inch X large, or even a deep dish. ($3.99-$12.99) The topping offerings include pepperoni, ham, mushroom, onion, green pepper, Italian sausage, bacon, beef, olives, tomato, pineapple, and mild peppers. You can mix and match whatever your taste buds are hungry for or choose from one of their specialty pizzas. The Howie Special for example is the loaded version, or the Howie Maui of ham, bacon, pineapple and mozzarella cheese. My favorite tends to be the Meat Lovers of all the meats with the butter cheese crust. After first sampling this one out of state, I am thrilled to have them locally when I am in the mood for pizza. Howie's also offers a veggie, philly steak, bacon cheddar cheeseburger, three cheeser or the pepperoni plus for an added extra cheese and pepperoni fix.
They offer plenty of deal specials that include their garden, Greek, chef, and antipasto salads, chicken wings, or breads. The breads are a must have along with your meal as the perfect complement. The Howie bread is perfectly buttered garlic sticks sprinkled with parmesan cheese, or for a bit of spice try the Cajun bread that is a bit on the hot side. The three cheeser is a favorite as you get to sample mozzarella, cheddar and parmesan cheese in one great bite of the bread sticks and 16 come in an order. For the sweet tooth check out the cinnamon bread which I have been known to order and have the next morning for breakfast as the cinnamon and sugar with a side of sweet white icing is as good the next day as fresh rolls. ($3.49-$4.99)
If you are in the sub mood then the turkey, turkey club, pizza sub, ham and cheese, Italian, or a veggie sub go great with a side salad. ($5.99-$6.99) When you can get 3 medium pizzas with one of everyone’s favorite topping or crust for $15 bucks, I don’t know what’s stopping you from dropping in for lunch, dinner or a late night craving.
The Drink
The regular array of fountain drinks are available or grab a liter bottle of your favorite soft drink and you are ready to sit back and enjoy some fine grub.
The Scene
Hungry Howie’s is easily reached from just about everywhere in the metro area. If you want to call ahead, they will have your order hot, ready and waiting when you drive up. I just stopped in and ordered and in a very short time my order is promptly prepared and piping hot and has my taste buds tingling. Hungry Howie's also has delivery service in and around the Reservoir area so be sure to call or check the website for the specific delivery areas. A few tables are available inside, several tables outside but mostly it's a grab and go establishment.
The Bottom Line
Yes, Hungry Howie’s Pizza is a chain establishment yet this location is the first and only one in the metro area. The locally-owned franchise is steadily making a name for itself in the community and is very supportive of area schools and local organizations. Be sure to give Hungry Howie's a test run. The unique flavors and different crusts will make you happy you did.
