La Cazuela is a neighborhood favorite near the Belhaven area of downtown Jackson and a definite hot spot for a great lunch or dinner. They have a constant lunch crowd from downtown businesses, college students, and hospitals as well as many travelers being situated right off I-55.
Whether you are in the mood for a quick lunch off their lunch express menu or coming in for happy hour leading up to a great night out, La Cazuela is a must visit Mexican joint. The Garcia family prides themselves in authentic dishes, great food, service, and libations.
The food: For an appetizer, nachos abound with cheese, beans, beef, chicken, or combo appetizers for a fine starter. Of course there’s the free endless chips and salsa which can be complemented by guacamole, queso, cazuela chile con queso, or spinach dips.
The expansive menu items of tacos, enchiladas, chalupas, burritos, and Spanish rice and refried beans are all reasonably priced and plentiful.
Salads and soups go well with your entrée with a variety of side orders to add to your meal. Most combos are numbered for easy ordering from $7.49-$7.99. At lunch time they serve up some great express, just the right size dishes for a quick, enjoyable fare in a timely fashion so as to enjoy a delicious meal and still get back to work on time.
Fajitas of chicken, steak, shrimp, and scallops are a favorite along with chimichanga and taco dishes for lunch. A delicious taco salad of beef or chicken served up in a crispy flour tortilla filled with plenty of cheese sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole makes for an excellent meal choice.
Most of the lunch items are worthy and I checked out a different dish on my recent visit. Papitos Fiesta—grilled chicken served on a bed of rice and smothered with queso dip and pico de gallo—was just the right size for my lunch especially with the endless chips ($8.25).
Fajitas can also be ordered for dinner as single or double dishes for sharing and are served with plenty of rice and beans. ($11.99-$22.99) That is just the cusp of the expansive offerings of a typical Mexican establishment with over 26 items to choose from. Seafood items are also available with plenty of sides to complement the entrees. If you are in a vegetarian mood check out the 7 different combos that will certainly be appreciated.
A nice a la carte menu can be found as an add-on to your entrée or a standalone meal as well as quesadillas which are “hang off your plate” big. There’s no disappointment with the offerings and doggie bags might be necessary.
The drink: A full service bar with plenty of beer and margaritas is constantly flowing as you choose from their domestic or import libations. There’s a variety of draft beer served up in chilled mugs from the jumbo, monster or by the pitcher, including the Mexican favorite Dos Equis and other south-of-the-border offerings.
Of course, you can’t say Mexican without margaritas being in the same sentence. Cazeula’s margs are an institution—fabulous, plentiful, knock-you-down big and most nights you can get a two for one special on them.
Just be careful as some of them might slip up on you as you enjoy just about every flavor imaginable. There’s also plenty of tequila shots and a full mixed drink selection, rounding out their excellent bar service. Many patrons come just to enjoy Cazeula’s bar offerings and their expansive outdoor seating, so it’s always a party.
But if you’re the DD or just stopping by for lunch, they of course have all the requisite soft drinks, tea, and juices as well, served up in massive tumblers to quench the thirst their chips and salsa kick up.
The scene: A great location, festive atmosphere and authentic food and drink are all right there for you at Cazuela whether you are lunching, hitting happy hour with friends, or grabbing the whole family for a night out.
They have a great covered patio with ceiling fans to meet and relax while having your adult beverage along with your meal. There’s plenty of opportunity for people watching and you might even catch the Mariachi band walking around and belting out some requests for that true Mexican feel. There’s plenty of seating inside and out from a cozy booth for two, or the large gathering spot with friends.
The bottom line: A great atmosphere, friendly folks, and just downright good Mexican cuisine are what you will find at La Cazuela. With plenty of food choices and an abundance of liquid libations, there’s always opportunity for a fiesta.
Grab some friends, plan an evening, and drop on by as you will definitely feel right at home in the heart of downtown Jackson and go away feeling quite relaxed after some good eats and great drinks for they are definitely in business for all the right reasons.
