“Having a good time” is the slogan of Mugshots, a bar and grill with a great atmosphere that lives up to that proclamation.
Owners Ron Savell and Chris McDonald started their dream restaurant and bar in Hattiesburg as a place for great food, good drinks, and pure fun at a very fair and affordable price. Their first location was created in 2004 and now they have 4 locations.
The newly renovated location on Lakeland Drive is a perfect spot near the Dogwood Festival shopping area in the heart of the ever-growing Flowood area. With the recent changes of the liquor laws the area is booming and definitely worthy of a visit.
The food: Ono Pupas is a Hawaiian term for great appetizers and that’s exactly what you will find. With 14 selections to choose from that are plenty large for sharing, you will definitely want to check one of them out. If you are having difficulty deciding try the Mombo Combo of a platter of three of the appetizer offerings. There’s also chips and salsa, cheese wedges, nachos, eggrolls, wings, dill pickle chips, quesadillas, onion rings, mushrooms, and mac and cheese bites to round out a perfect appetizer menu.
The Mugshot gourmet burgers are some of the best we have ever tried. In fact, Mugshots has been voted Best Burger in Mississippi for the past three years. The burgers are a full half pound of meat served on a toasted sourdough bun and partnered with some mighty good beer-battered fries.
The signature burgers are uniquely named such as the Middleberger (a regular burger with all the trimmings), the Pato (quite cheesy with Swiss and cheddar cheese), the Savell (with bacon and cheese), the McDonald (with barbecue sauce, bacon and cheese), Stu’s magic mushroom (with sautéed mushrooms), the Gamble (with heapings of chili), the Walker (with bleu cheese crumbles), the Trevor (with 1,000 island dressing), or a very unique mix called Anthony’s peanut butter burger ($8.20-$8.59).
Now for a real challenge, try the three-tiered burger piled high with all the fixings, a pickle, and an onion ring. If you finish the burger in 12 minutes it is free, but if you can’t you need to be prepared to lay down a $20 spot.
Burgers aren’t all they have though—sandwiches can also be found with signature names and prepared quite well. They include chicken, thinly sliced beef served up New Orleans style, country fried steak, pulled pork, BLT with cheese, chicken salad, and a sirloin steak Philly cheese. They also have eight salad offerings of crispy fried chicken, grilled chicken, chicken salad, Philly cheese steak, or Cajun chicken ($7.99-$8.29). They also have two pasta offerings of Rajun Cajun (marinated chicken with alfredo sauce), or parmesan chicken alfredo for the pasta lover.
A soup of the day, plenty of side items, a dessert of the day or a delicious milk shake will round out your dining experience just right.
The drink: A nice bar with plenty of seating is situated in front of four huge flat screen televisions for the “sit at the bar” eater or drinker. They have a huge selection of domestic and import beer by the glass or bottle as well as a nice draft selection. Very soon they will be a full service bar with the recent changes in the Flowood area laws. You will also find plenty of iced tea, soft drinks, juices and coffee. They have great nightly beer specials, happy hour and late night features with plenty more in store as things progress in the area.
The scene: Recently Mugshots left the Quarter on Lakeland Drive to their newest location closer to the thriving Dogwood shopping area (some might remember it when it was Corky’s or more recently the Chimneyville Fish House). The standalone two-story building is open and airy with plenty of booths, tables, upstairs dining, outside dining and room for live entertainment. If television sports are your thing, you will definitely enjoy all the finely situated flat screens for every type of sports watching. It is not a problem to bring the kids or meet with friends at this area hot spot that has a great following and is definitely an upbeat addition to the area.
The bottom line: Great food and good drinks in a fun and relaxing atmosphere is exactly what you will find at Mugshots. Plenty of seating andmeeting and gathering space with extremely timely service are all sure to make you feel right at home. Mugshots is the brainchild of two Mississippi boys that are definitely proud of their home state roots who now have locations in Hattiesburg, Starkville, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Jackson. There is definitely plenty of fun times awaiting you during your very first visit.
