Shapley’s, a metro Jackson staple for more than 20 years, is all about fine dining in a comfortable, elegant, and relaxing atmosphere. It’s just the right combination for intimate dining, a special corporate meeting or wedding reception with great service, delicious offerings and a spectacular wine list.
Shapley’s is award-winning, locally-owned and operated and just downright traditionally good. Whether you are in a steak or seafood mood, both await you with great offerings with time-tested experience.
The food: Appetizers abound. Large fried crab claws, fried crawfish tails, marinated crab claws, out-of-this-world delicious crawfish bisque and certainly the homemade hot tamales are a must try. Escargot, fried pasta, barbecue shrimp, smoked salmon and the fried Maine lobster tail round out the starters.
Fresh seafood is brought in daily, so no need to worry about run-of-the-mill frozen entrees. Grilled tuna, grilled salmon, jumbo fried shrimp, Atlantic halibut, and grilled chicken can all stand alone or top them off with some jumbo lump crabmeat. A full lamb rack and a 14-ounce veal chop are quite pleasing and worthy as well.
Now being an extreme steak lover, I have to rave about their magnificent filets. They are hand cut and range in size from a 6-ounce to a 20-ounce. They are superbly prepared, presented on a very hot plate and are a melt-in-your-mouth dream. Having eaten many steaks in all parts of the land, I consistently go back to this great local establishment for mouth-watering filets.
If you prefer another cut be sure to check out the ribeye, New York strip, porterhouse, t-bone, or the filet tips as they are delicious. They offer plenty of steak toppings to compliment your steak, though all are delicious alone.
All entrees are served with a fresh green salad and the side offerings are large enough for sharing—ordering a couple will definitely round out your main course. The sides include pasta with cream or marinara sauce, fries, sugar peas and carrots, roasted new potatoes, herb and garlic toast, scalloped potatoes, cream spinach au gratin or asparagus with parmesan and hollandaise.
If you can possibly eat another bite after such wonderful appetizers and entrees a very nice assortment of desserts with an after dinner drink or cup of coffee will certainly end your evening to perfection.
The drink: Shapley’s is a full service restaurant with multiple awards for their expansive wine offerings. They have won Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence for the past seven years for their incredible wines. Their wine list features over 700 selections both import and domestics with plenty of knowledgeable wait staff to help with your selection.
On the night we dined, it happened to be our anniversary and was surprisingly treated to a glass of delicious champagne. They also have many after dinner drink specials as well as soft drinks, tea and juices.
The scene: Shapley’s is situated in a beautifully decorated building with a front of house bar complimented by a nice gathering area to meet your friends.
You will be promptly seated, but it’s better to call ahead and reserve your dining hour as they get pretty busy most nights. They have plenty of intimate seating for that romantic dinner for two and the tables are situated in semi private coves as well as larger tables for groups. Nice background music is inviting and not too loud allowing for good conversation and an enjoyable evening.
The bottom line: Chef and owner Scott Koestler, has an abundance of experience in the restaurant business and has continued the tradition the Shapley family began. Having Jeff Shapley as their general manager adds to the tradition. They strive to bring their diners the freshest ingredients, local seafood and great and timely service for an overall exceptional night of dining.
