Sportsman’s Lodge, located in Maywood Mart in the heart of north Jackson, is an area sports bar and restaurant that features a very comfortable atmosphere with all the action of an upscale bar and grill.
Sportsman’s features 20 televisions to watch your favorite team sport while enjoying some friendly service and excellent food items. You can definitely unwind from your day, stop in for a great lunch, or stay all night and play plenty of video games or pool.
The food: Start out with one of their fine appetizers —alligator tail strips, Mexican fried okra, fried pickles, chips with plenty of queso cheese dip, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, nachos or quesadillas. Last but not least, their award-winning wings are wow-inducing and well worth sharing.
They serve up a daily soup special by the cup or bowl and their award-winning all beef stadium hot dogs are a must try. The hot dogs are all named for sports teams and are served up with a choice of fries, onion rings, sweet tater fries, or chips.
The names fit the dogs—minor league, Yankee, Braves, Cubs, Diamondback, Marlins, Phillies, Brewers, Astros, Mississippi Braves or major leaguer—and are all different for their creative toppings (the M-Braves dog features beer-battered onion rings, creole mustard and relish, for instance) and are just the right combo for the at-the-ball-park feel.
Salads are also pretty delicious with a combo offering of soup and salad, house, chef or the Sin City salad (greens, loaded down with fried shrimp, gator, spinach, carrots, onions, tomatoes and cheese). There’s plenty of great dressings to complement them as standalone meals or add chicken, shrimp, fried gator tails or chopped steak for a definite meal.
Baskets, which include chicken strips, catfish, or shrimp, come with choice of a side and are a tasty, well-seasoned version of classic bar munchies.
The sandwiches will have you coming back for more—they include a half-pounder burger, chicken sandwich, the Lodge burger (which is quite big and loaded), chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, Philly cheese, or the Lodge Press Club—a melted cheese triple decker club on Foccacia bread. Their turkey panini, po-boys of catfish or shrimp and a turkey Reuben wrap round out a definitely worthy list of sandwiches.
All food items are under $10 so you won’t kill your pocket book and you’ll have plenty to spare for some great libations.
The drink: Plenty of beer, beer, and more beer can be found with over 100 different brands to choose from. Then of course there is full bar service with plenty of adult mixed drinks. With a sports bar theme any guest will find what they are thirsty for and plenty of helpful staff to deliver it to your table or stool.
You will also find good old fashioned iced tea, soft drinks and coffee for those that are just thirsting for something at lunch time.
Sportsman’s Lodge has happy hour every day of the week from 3-7 p.m. so come on in for that after work meeting or wind down experience.
The scene: Situated on the north end of Maywood Mart, nestled in the corner, Sportsman’s is somewhat deceiving at first glance.
However, once inside, you will find an expansive eating area as well as plenty of television watching available. A long full service bar with bar seating and plenty of space to move around while meeting and greeting friends is just the right combination for a fun time.
They have an internet jukebox that plays just about any genre you might be in the mood for. Video games abound as well as the billiards tables for that competitive edge. Booths and tables are plentiful for a sit-down meal and some good sports watching. They make a point to have college football on Saturday and the NFL on Sunday, in fact, just about all the time some type of sports is going to be visible from their well placed flat screened televisions.
The bottom line: Sportsman’s Lodge is more than just a neighborhood sports bar. It has a great lunch crowd following from area businesses, a kid-friendly atmosphere during the day, and a good, much better-than-average bar food-style menu.
They have received numerous awards in their short three years of operation and will continue to provide good food in a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Chris Jacobs and his fantastic staff are aiming to provide their patrons with a comfortable feel, good food and plenty of entertainment seven days a week, so drop in for a great lunch, or stay late for some great fun time.
