The Blue Rooster opened its doors in November of 2008 and has been steadily making a name for their efforts in helping the revitalization of the Flora downtown area. Housed in what was once a general store sitting right off the main railroad tracks, the Blue Rooster makes for a quite unique dining experience. Easily accessed off Highway 49 to the west or Highway 22 from I-55, the Blue Rooster is well worth a quick drive for a delicious pub-style eat spot.
The food: Start things out just right with some fine appetizers of cheese fries, chili con queso and chips, cheese sticks, nachos of chicken or steak, egg rolls or Rooster wings with lots of dipping sauce options. Don’t miss the chance to try the fried dill pickle spears, awesome and they go well with some of their “hollarback” or ranch dressing ($4.99-$12.99).
A variety of salad options are available with chicken salad (fried or grilled or buffalo) or a house salad with plenty of dressing options to complement the stand-alone salad or a sure bet with an appetizer.
Their burgers are a definite must-try. They are some of the best I have tried and believe me I have had plenty around the area. They are served up homemade with a side of fries, onion rings, potato salad, sweet tater fries or a fruit cup. The Rooster burger is a build-your-own style with just about any creation you choose. The flame thrower is a burger patty with sirloin steak and is definitely worth the visit alone. The big nasty is two patties with an abundance of additional treats. The old fashioned is served with chili but any burger can be built as you please ($5.99-$9.99).
Sandwiches abound with a great rib eye served up just the way you like it, a Rooster club, The Blue Rooster of fried chicken, Kickin’ Chicken with your chicken basted in buffalo sauce, philly steak and cheese and some out of this world homemade pimiento cheese or chicken salad round out the offerings that are served with one side ($7.99-$10.99).
A chicken tender basket as well as a kids menu can be found that will certainly please all diners. The desserts of cheese cake or some unique funnel cake fries are worthy and fun to try as well.
The drink: They serve canned soft drinks, iced tea, bottled water, and IBC root beer to complement your meal decision. A nice selection of domestic and import beers are served up ice cold for those diners craving an adult beverage.
The scene: Being situated in the old brick building right off the railroad tracks, The Blue Rooster will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. The renovated building has around 50 seats and is decorated with plenty of memorabilia and college signage to make you feel right at home. They have taken the old and blended it with the new to grab the attention of any type diner.
The bottom line: The Blue Rooster is well worth a short drive from any area of the metro, whether it is for a great lunch with friends or a meeting place for a fun evening of burger eating and visiting. With the steady revitalization of the downtown area of Flora they are well worth the short drive to enjoy a very neat and nostalgic dining experience.
